New Inn Fire Station Redevelopment Plan

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) is bringing forward plans to replace the existing New Inn Fire Station, in Pontypool, with an updated and sustainable Fire Station on its existing site.

The current Station was built over 70 years ago, opening for the first time in 1952. The building has now reached its material end of life, however, and is no longer fit for purpose.

Station Commander for New Inn, Simon Brown, said:

“Construction of the new-build Fire Station brings the opportunity to design a building with sustainability as a key objective. SWFRS aims to achieve a Net Zero Carbon energy rating for the new building, as an exemplar project within SWFRS’ estate.

“The Station’s existing brick training tower will be replaced with a black steel frame tower,

there will be 23 parking spaces, including three disabled bays and five electric vehicle charging stations, and the new building will even feature solar panels on its roof.”

Five field maple trees will also be planted across the site, as well as a new hedgerow, shrubs, grass and well-being area for staff. Bat and bird boxes will be erected in consideration of the local wildlife.

A planning application for a temporary Fire Station to “ensure an appropriate level of service in Pontypool” is maintained during the construction period is due to be submitted.
