Black History Month 2022

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service supports Black History Month 2022 

Throughout this October, Team South Wales will be marking #BlackHistoryMonth with several activities, in our quest to be a more diverse workforce representing all people within our communities.  

Firefighter Alex Szekely, of Station 21 Aberbargoed, represents the black and ethnic minority staff network within South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and has shaped how the Service will celebrate the month. 

Activities this month include: 

• New and updated staff profiles of people from our black communities  
• A livestream Q and A on Friday 14 October from 1200 – 1300, where two of our Firefighters will be talking about their experiences of the role from their perspective as a black Firefighter. Join the livestream here
• An exhibition at the 999 Day in Cardiff Bay on 22 October, showing the inspirations and stories of our staff from the black community 
• Open events, which all are welcome to attend:
  • Maindee Station Open Event, Saturday 29 October 1000 – 1200
  • Grangetown Pavilion Community Safety and Open Event, Saturday 29 October 1000 – 1230 

Firefighter Szekely said “Black History Month is a way to celebrate the diversity and different experiences within the Fire and Rescue Service. I’m proud to represent the Service and I hope that more people from our communities will consider a career with us, as we strive to represent the diverse communities that we serve.”
