South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s 999 Day!

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) are taking over Cardiff Bay’s Roald Dahl Plass on Saturday 22 October for a BIG 999 Rescue Event, packed with exciting rescue demonstrations, competitions and activities for all the family.

Celebrating all things emergency services, SWFRS will be joined by multiple partners from across South Wales, including both South Wales and Gwent Police, Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST), Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), the Coastguard, MedServe, Territorial Army, Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and The Welsh Blood Service and many more!

The event runs from 10am to 4pm and will take place in Roald Dahl Plass and the surrounding areas.

Cardiff Central Station Commander, Roger Magan, said:

“We are extremely pleased to once again be able to host our 999 Emergency Services Day event with partners at Cardiff Bay.

All emergency services and partners will be sharing life-saving information during the event, whether that’s regarding home safety, water safety or road safety. Please engage with us and our partners and take this opportunity ask any questions you may have or find our more about our organisations.

We’re expecting it to be a busy day, with large footfall of visitors and lots of demonstrations and activities taking place, so we’d like to advise the public to follow safety advice and guidance during the event, so we can all enjoy the day safely.”

What demonstrations will there be at the event?

There will be a host of demonstrations and exercises taking place for members of the public to observe. Here’s the full line-up:

  • 10am – 4pm: Rope Rescue Demonstrations
  • 11am – 12pm: Road Traffic Collision and Vehicle Extrication
  • 12pm – 1pm: Fire Cadets Demonstrations
  • 1pm – 2pm: Road Traffic Collision and Vehicle Extrication
  • 2pm – 3pm: Water Rescue and Throwline Competition (bank side)

We’ll also have Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) show and tell, SWFRS and partner displays going on throughout the day!

What advice will be available during the event?

At the event, we have a dedicated Community Safety Tent, where experts will be able to share specialist information and advice regarding home safety, road safety, education services, recruitment and much more!

Interested in becoming a firefighter, or just want to find out more about a role with SWFRS?

Come and speak to our recruitment experts who will be available in the Community Safety Tent to offer advice and guidance. You’ll also be able to try on fire kit and take on some of our Firefighter fitness tests.

Is this a family friend event?

The event is a family friendly, and all are welcome to attend!

In the Community Safety Tent which includes an area for Education and Young People Services. There, you’ll be able to hear about the programmes and services we run for children and young people and find out safety information.

We’ll also be running two creative competitions during the day:

  • Younger visitors aged 10 years and below will be able to enter a competition for best drawing at our Education Stand in the Community Safety Area
  • Those aged 10 years and above will be able to share their best photo from the event on Twitter | Facebook | Instagram, tagging in SWFRS and using #999CardiffBay

If you’re under 13 years of age, please ask a parent or guardian to submit on your behalf.
