Keeping my home safe

Living in a flat does not increase your chance of having a fire. In most incidences of fires in mid or highrise buildings it will be safe for you to remain in your flat if your building has a “stay put” evacuation procedure. It is important that you know and understand your buildings evacuation procedures and where you can find out about any changes. This is usually through your building management team or your landlord.

Smoke alarms:

Working smoke alarms save lives. If your flat is not fitted with an alarm these can be purchased from supermarkets and DIY stores.

Alternatively, you can request a home fire safety check

Know your escape route:

If there is a fire inside your flat, you should:

  • Take your normal route out – BUT do not use the lift, the lifts will not work.
  • If you cannot safely use the stairs alone go to a refuge point or place of safety (e.g., a neighbour’s flat) and call 999.
  • Do not stop to investigate what has happened or attempt to rescue belongings – get out, stay out and call 999 when safe to do so.
  • Always close the door on a fire, this will slow down the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Meet with the fire service when they arrive to give them information on the fire’s location.

If there is a fire elsewhere in your building:

  • Follow your buildings evacuation procedures.
  • If your buildings procedure is to stay put, remain in your flat unless there is smoke or flames entering. If you need to escape call 999 and wait for directions.
  • If your buildings procedure is to evacuate do so calmly and safely. If you are unable to escape for any reason, go to a place that is clear of smoke and call 999.
  • If firefighters need you to evacuate, they will contact you by: Banging on flat doors, Air horns or In built evacuation alarm system
  • Watch SWFRS social media for regular updates on the fire and any change to the evacuation strategy.
  • If you need to leave for another reason (i.e. attend work / school etc) please call 999 before leaving your flat to ensure you are safe to do so.

If you are cut off by fire:

  • If your escape route is blocked by fire or smoke, stay inside a room that is clear of smoke, ideally with a window that opens and call 999.
  • Keep the door closed and use towels or bedding at the bottom of the door to block the smoke.
  • If safe to do so go to a balcony or window so that you can be seen. DO NOT jump.
  • Wait to be rescued by a firefighter and listen to all advice given by fire control.

Balconies

  • If your flat has a balcony do not use this area to have a BBQ or fire pit
  • If you smoke on your balcony always ensure your cigarette is properly put out and never throw it over the side
  • Never set off fireworks from your balcony
  • Do not fix additional timber, screening, or flooring to the balcony, this could cause fire spread.
  • Report any damage to your balcony to your building manager.
  • Limit what you store on your balcony as it could cause fire spread.
