Appointment of new Assistant Chief Fire Officers
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dean Loader and Brian Thompson as the new Assistant Chief Fire Officers (ACFOs) of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS).
Dean Loader joined Gwent Fire Brigade in 1995, then SWFRS through local reorganisation in 1996, and has held various roles in that time – most recently as Temporary Director for Service Delivery. Brian Thompson began his career with what was South Glamorgan Fire Service in January 1996, and then became SWFRS on amalgamation in April 1996. Brian is currently responsible for Technical Services. Both individuals having progressed through the ranks to achieve the senior leadership positions they hold today.
The Commissioners for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service commented: “The permanent appointments of Dean Loader and Brian Thompson help ensure that we have the leadership necessary to guide us through the challenges ahead, as we continue on this path of change. With a strong executive leadership team, SWFRS will have the resource it needs to provide the clarity, stability, and support to build on the progress we’ve made and deliver the highest standards of service that our communities deserve.”
The recruitment process for these roles was thorough, transparent, and inclusive, involving applicants and stakeholders from both within and outside of SWFRS. This process reflects the Service’s ongoing commitment to appointing the best executive leadership team to help guide the Service through the changes essential for its future success.
Dean, Brian, and Chris Hadfield, who was recently appointed into the temporary ACFO role, now make up the Executive Leadership team alongside Dominic Mika, Alison Reed, Lisa Mullan and Fin Monahan.
Chief Fire Officer Fin Monahan, who took up his post in November, with a focus on strengthening the executive leadership team, commented:
“I am absolutely delighted with these appointments. Dean and Brian bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the team, and I am proud to work alongside them as we continue to drive the improvements that will shape the future of our Service. Together, we will ensure that we are well-positioned to deliver the very best for the communities we serve, and, most importantly, for the talented and dedicated individuals who make up SWFRS.”
“Both candidates have demonstrated a deep understanding of the importance of rebuilding confidence in the Service and supporting our colleagues to thrive. They fully recognise the challenges we face and the need to create a positive, forward-thinking environment where our people are empowered to be their best selves.”
ACFO Dean Loader expressed his gratitude for the opportunity:
“First and foremost, I would like to express my deep gratitude for the trust and confidence placed in me by the CFO and Commissioners with this appointment. I am incredibly honoured to take on this new responsibility with humility, and I am excited to work alongside all of you, the talented and dedicated individuals who make SWFRS what it is.”
“We will continue to evolve as a team, embracing the challenges that come our way with innovation, resilience, and professionalism.”
ACFO Brian Thompson added:
“I am very proud and honoured to be appointed permanently to ACFO in SWFRS, and wish to convey my sincere thanks to the CFO and Commissioners for the confidence they have placed in me.
“I am committed to delivering the best possible service to both our staff and our communities. Along with the senior leadership team, I will collectively work with and empower our dedicated staff to bring the change necessary for us to meet the challenges we currently face, and introduce the innovation needed to transform our Service for the future.”
Please join us in congratulating Dean and Brian on their appointments and supporting them in their roles.
