Cardiff fly-tipping hotspot tackled by local firefighters
Crews from Roath Fire and Rescue Station have been repeatedly called to a number of refuse fires in recent weeks at a site on Norwich Road in Cardiff.
Fly-tippers have been illegally dumping waste and subsequently setting the refuse alight, putting lives in danger.
The Service’s Fire Crime Unit are worked closely with partners including the local authorities enforcement team to facilitate a clear up to prevent fly-tipping and deliberate fires.
On occasions, the waste in the area measured about a tenth of a standard football pitch, which will not only have a devastating effect on the environment, but could also have a detrimental impact on local residents health when the materials are set alight releasing dangerous gases and chemicals.
Last year, crews attended nearly 4000 deliberate fires in South Wales with over half of those linked to refuse being deliberately set alight.
Rubbish fires are extremely dangerous and can lead to a strain on resources, when there could be other emergencies where lives are in danger. What may have been intended to be just a small fire can quickly spread to become out of control.
If you choose to dump rubbish you could be fuelling the fire and choosing to contribute to a tragedy. Please take responsibility and ensure your waste is disposed of correctly.
Remember – if you do come across any suspicious activity, please call CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or ring 101. In an emergency, always call 999.
Always use a registered waste carrier. Please don’t fuel the fire.
