Firefighter Georgina Gilbert of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and her fellow Antarctic Fire Angel Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe from Mid and West Wales FRS, are attempting another huge challenge beginning tomorrow.
On the back of their triumphant expedition to the South Pole, the pair are now gearing up to accomplish seven marathons in seven consecutive days wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus sets – with Rebecca also travelling across seven continents – in what’s known as The Great World Race.
No strangers to a challenge, from November 2023 until January 2024, George and Bex skied 1,239km from Union Glacier to the South Pole – unassisted and unsupported, completing the equivalent of 29 marathons in 52 days.
Now, the Antarctic Fire Angels want to keep the momentum of their message alive, empowering women and girls to attempt challenges that they may never have thought possible.
The duo are fundraising through their Just Giving page, with a £10,000 target to achieve.
Georgina’s first marathon begins at 9.45am on Friday 15th November at Carmarthen Velodrome, where she will be completing 105 laps of the spectator path.
Personnel from both South Wales and Mid and West Wales will be watching from the sidelines to support Georgina, with some intending to join her for a few laps. If anybody would like to go along and support, you can see the attached schedule for race details.
We wish George and Bex the very best of luck!
