Update – Storm Dennis
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) are continuing to support and respond to the communities affected by Storm Dennis over the weekend. Our Joint Fire Control received an unprecedented level of more than 1300 calls; including life rescues, property evacuations and flooding concerns.
Firefighters conducted a significant amount of life rescues, including incidents where lives were directly at risk due to the dangerous conditions which prevailed. Over 350 emergency calls were received for the Pontypridd, Nantgarw and Aberdare areas alone. Thanks to our emergency service partners we were able to divert non-emergency calls, which allowed our resourcing to be focused on critical 999 calls.
We understand the disruption has been significant and there will be many people who are left dealing with the aftermath of what has been a devastating storm. We would like to thank the public for their cooperation over the weekend and offer reassurance that we are there for our communities whenever required. Whilst the situation across the region shows signs of improvement, public warnings and alerts remain in place and must be adhered to and respected.
We appreciate all of the support we have had from partner agencies, volunteers organisations and our communities during this challenging time. During the adverse weather conditions we had around 300 firefighters actively on duty at any one time. Due to large call volume, SWFRS requested national assistance for specialist equipment including rescue boats. These were held nearby, however were not required due to the situation improving mid to late afternoon.
We’d also like to thank SWFRS personnel who volunteered to assist and work in order to help the community as a whole. We cannot underestimate the community spirit within South Wales, who were patient and followed the evolving safety messaging.
As a Service we are humbled and overwhelmed by the acts of kindness and support displayed by our communities to both our firefighters and the wider community as a whole.
Thank you.
