Volunteers’ Week – Mackenzie’s Story
My parents met in the fire service, so I’ve grown up with it, and been around it all my life. When I was 13 I became a Fire Cadet, and then a Volunteer at 16. In July 2019 I earned an Outstanding Achievement award for my active volunteering. I enjoy volunteering with SWFRS because you get to do things that you can’t anywhere else – it’s really a special place to be and it’s so fun. Some of the favourite activities I’ve helped in is the Phoenix Project and Firefighter for a Day. Through volunteering in these activities, I realised how rewarding working with and helping younger people is, which drove me to return to the Fire Cadets scheme as a Cadet Instructor. I’m not done yet though, and hope to advance further into the fire service!
